Several eye witnesses, including airport officials, saw a large, yellow disc-like object moving over the city of Wellington toward Island Bay. The object was said to have descended on the bay near Cook Strait.
The local police said the object was visible from the coast with binoculars, but that the sea was too rough to send a boat to investigate. A witness who lived near the coast claimed that ‘flames’ were visible shortly before its descent.
No aircraft were reported missing or in difficulty.
