BREAKING NEWS! New Zealand MOD prepares to release classified UFO documents 27 January 2010 Over the past 14 months, New Zealand’s UFO Research Network, UFOCUS NZ, has communicated directly with Lt Gen Jerry Mataparae, Chief of Defence Force NZ, on the issue of the release of MOD classified UFO sighting reports and related documents. UFOCUS NZ Director, Suzanne Hansen, says that initially, the Chief of Defence stated, “It would require a substantial amount of collation, research and consultation to identify whether any of that information could be released,” and that he was not in a position to deploy staff to undertake that task, given other work priorities. However, the Chief of Defence also voiced his personal perspective on the issue, “In the longer term, recognizing the ongoing public interest in this topic, I would like to see a summary of information held about UFO sightings produced, in much the same way as that which is produced by the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence. Given the existing constraints, however, I cannot predict when that objective could be achieved.” Then in December 2009, following ongoing communications, the Chief of Defence stated in a letter to UFOCUS NZ, “I am pleased to be able to inform you that two NZDF officers have begun the task of assessing classified files held in relation to this topic with a view to declassification. I would expect that files which are transferred to Archives New Zealand would be subject to extensive embargo periods in terms of access by the general public.” A Chief of Defence Force office spokesperson advised, “The declassification of the UFO files is now a ‘work in progress’ in conjunction with Archives New Zealand. The files must be amended to meet new requirements of the Privacy Act. ” The Defence Force will notifyUFOCUS NZ when this process is completed later this year, and the research network will be given the opportunity of access to the files. Hansen states UFOCUS NZ's own archives contain credible and detailed UFO sighting reports from New Zealand pilots, air traffic controllers, and military personnel. In addition, the research network holds sighting reports from members of the public who experienced significant UFO sightings dating as far back as 1908. Some of these prominent cases were investigated by NZ Air Force personnel, and she is hopeful the MOD files may contain their reports. It is likely the files will also contain additional information about the renowned ‘Kaikoura lights’ sightings which made world headlines in 1978/79. UFOCUS NZ staff member and former Chief air traffic controller of Wellington International Airport, John Cordy, witnessed the Kaikoura lights on airport control centre radar, and states, “I hope the files will validate the reality of the sightings, and vindicate key witnesses who observed them, and faced ‘trial by media’.” Hansen says UFO sightings are on the increase in New Zealand, with patterns and characteristics that parallel reported UFO sightings and ‘flaps’ occurring worldwide, and that an increase in sightings reported to UFOCUS NZ is a direct result of heightened public awareness and growing interest in the subject in New Zealand.

Mystery lights pass over Moutere area By ALASTAIR PAULIN - The Nelson Mail Last updated 13:00 23/11/2009 No-one used the word UFO but the lights seen in the sky over Upper Moutere, near Nelson, last night are definitely unidentified. Several people reported seeing balls of fire in the sky about 9.30pm, with Matiu Noakes saying he saw nine, moving from the direction of Kina toward Upper Moutere. "They looked like skydivers coming down with flares attached to them." He said they faded out over Upper Moutere and were going too fast to be flares. Lisa Chambers, marketing manager for Skydive Abel Tasman and a keen member of Nelson's skydiving community, said "there is absolutely no way it could have been skydivers". She said night drops were too dangerous in that area and had there been a prank afoot, she would have known. Mike Reed, a helicopter pilot, said he was driving toward Motueka along the Moutere Highway when he saw the lights. He saw several other cars parked at the turnoff to Neudorf Rd, and spoke to others there who had been watching the lights. He said he expected to hear aircraft noise when he turned off his engine but it was completely silent. Even so, he double-checked with air traffic control at Nelson Airport, which knew of no aircraft in the sky nearby at the time. He said the lights were below the clouds, which he estimated to be about 300 to 500 metres up, and one of them appeared to float up into the clouds. "If I was going to take a guess on it, I would say somebody's got a bunch of helium balloons and they've tied something on to it." But he had discounted every theory he had come up with so far. Astronomer Robert Rea, of the Nelson Science Society, said he doubted anything astronomical would have pierced last night's cloud cover. Motueka police said they received no calls.
Theories abound on night lights The Nelson Mail Last updated 13:00 25/11/2009 People love a mystery. Speculation on the cause of what appeared to be floating balls of fire in the sky above Upper Moutere on Sunday night has made The Nelson Mail story about the sightings one of the most commented stories on the Stuff website. Theories have ranged from ball lightning – a controversial atmospheric electrical phenomenon – to tissue-paper hot air balloons to unprintable joke explanations involving fire crackers and Australian rugby players. The most knowledgeable comment came from a person who claimed to be the radar controller of the airspace above Nelson at the time. They wrote: "I can say the airspace around Nelson was busy last night, which it is not normally. The atmospheric conditions and the number of aircraft operating in the area could have easily created an illusion of something unusual." The Nelson air traffic control tower was closed by 9.30pm on Sunday, when the lights were seen, and the radar controller was based at Christchurch airport. Andy Boyd, the Christchurch terminal services manager for Airways Corporation of New Zealand, said he could not identify that controller for privacy reasons. He said: "There appears to have been an air ambulance flight that arrived from Wellington near this time and it appears to have flown the normal instrument approach to the west and southwest of Nelson Airport, which would put it out towards the Kina area before moving towards the airport for landing. "At this time of the night the aircraft would be 'lit up' with its landing lights very visible and quite bright. However, the movement of the lights would be rather slow, there would also be accompanying aircraft noise from its engines and propellers." He added the information was "in no way a validation or confirmation of what people think they observed on Sunday night". Mike Reed, a helicopter pilot who saw the lights from his car at the corner of Neudorf Rd and the Moutere Highway, said he had heard no aircraft noise and the lights appeared to be below the clouds. **************************************************************************************************************

UFO experts believe the incidents, which happened in south Wales earlier this month, are 'particularly significant' because they included observations made by the crew of a police helicopter and military personnel. The ministry confirmed today that it had been handed footage captured on a mobile phone by a corporal on guard duty at Tern Hill barracks, near Market Drayton, Shropshire, on 7 June. Corporal Mark Proctor told The Sun newspaper that he witnessed a 'fleet' of objects zig-zagging across the sky at about 11pm. The 38-year-old soldier, a member of the 1st Battalion Irish Regiment, said: 'I was on duty in the guard room when the other boys outside began shouting. 'I went out to see what the commotion was about and could see 13 craft in the skies. They were like rotating cubes with multiple colours.' Former UFO expert at the British ministry of defence Nick Pope said that an inquiry to establish what had been seen by the witnesses was vital. Mr Pope said: 'Something quite extraordinary does seem to be going on in British air space at the moment. 'There has got to be an official inquiry into all this and we need a senior air force officer to take personal charge and oversee the inquiry.' Radar tapes, as well as footage of the incidents, should be examined as part of the investigation, said Mr Pope, who added: 'It's indisputable that something was seen - the very fact that it was seen by military personnel over a military base makes it a national security incident.' A British army spokesman declined to comment in detail on the sightings at Tern Hill. 'The ministry examines reports solely to establish whether UK airspace may have been compromised by hostile or unauthorized military activity,' the spokesman said. 'Unless there is evidence of a potential threat, there is no attempt to identify the nature of each sighting reported.'
